Why We Don’t Add Probiotic Powders to Our Wellness Shots

You've seen the labels. "Billions of CFUs." "Live active cultures." "Supports gut health." But what does the science actually say — and why do so many wellness shots contain probiotic powder?
At Elixir Shots, we've asked these same questions. And the answers led us in a different direction than most wellness shot brand. Here's what we found, and why we chose real roots and fruits over added probiotic powders.
What Is the Gut Microbiome?
The gut microbiome is the vast ecosystem of microorganisms — bacteria, fungi, viruses, and more — living inside your digestive system. It contains trillions of microbes that interact constantly with the foods you eat, the medications you take, and the environment around you.
These microorganisms collectively carry millions of genes — far more than the number found in human DNA. Because of this complexity, researchers increasingly treat the microbiome as an ecosystem rather than a simple biological system.
One of the most important discoveries in microbiome research? No two people have the exact same one.
Diet, environment, genetics, medications, and lifestyle all influence the composition of the microbial community in your gut. The microbiome is deeply, fundamentally individual.
The Rise of Probiotics in Wellness Products
As interest in gut health has grown, probiotics — live microorganisms intended to interact with the gut microbiome — have become common ingredients in supplements, yogurts, beverages, and wellness shots.
But probiotic science is more nuanced than many product labels suggest.
Here's something that surprises many people: probiotic research is strain-specific. That means scientific studies are conducted on individual strains of bacteria — not on probiotics as a general category. Some strains have extensive clinical research behind them. Others have very little.
Well-studied strains include:
- Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG
- Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis BB-12
These strains have been evaluated in numerous human clinical studies. But not every probiotic listed on a product label has the same level of research — and that distinction matters.
Why Most Probiotic Beverages Use Bacillus coagulans
Here's a practical reality of the beverage industry: most fruit-based drinks and wellness shots are naturally highly acidic, especially those made with citrus or fruit juices. That acidic environment makes it difficult for many probiotic bacteria to remain viable during manufacturing, distribution, and shelf life.
For this reason, most packaged probiotic beverages rely on Bacillus coagulans — a spore-forming bacterium that is more resilient in acidic environments and more stable over time.
Bacillus coagulans is practical for beverage manufacturing. However, compared to strains like Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, it has a smaller and more variable body of research, with results that differ depending on the specific strain studied and how it's used.
Probiotic Effects Vary From Person to Person
Even when a probiotic strain has strong research behind it, here's what scientists have found: responses are highly individualized.
Two people can consume the same probiotic product and experience very different outcomes within their microbiome. Research has shown that probiotic bacteria may colonize the gut in some individuals but not in others. In certain cases, the microorganisms pass through the digestive system entirely without establishing themselves.
The takeaway: because each person's microbial ecosystem is different, there's no universal probiotic solution.
Our Approach: Start With Real Ingredients
When we set out to build Elixir Shots, we asked a simple question: given everything we know about the microbiome, what can we actually stand behind?
The answer wasn't probiotic powder. It was real ingredients.
Because microbiomes are highly individual and probiotic effects depend on specific strains and individual biology, we chose to focus on something more fundamental: cold-pressed roots and fruits with bold flavors, vibrant colors, and naturally occurring plant compounds.
Our wellness shots are crafted from:
- Turmeric root
- Ginger root
- Citrus fruits
- Beet root
- Cacao and matcha
These ingredients have long been valued in culinary traditions around the world for their potency and integrity. We start with whole plant ingredients — not powders, not additives.

A Simpler Philosophy for a Complex System
Microbiome research is still evolving. Scientists continue to study how diet, environment, and individual biology interact with the trillions of microbes living in the digestive system. What researchers increasingly agree on is that the microbiome is complex, individualized, and influenced by many factors.
At Elixir Shots, we believe wellness can start with something simple: real food.
No probiotic powders. Just real roots and fruits — crafted into wellness shots that deliver bold flavor and ingredient integrity in every bottle.
